Free Science Cafe Solar Eclipse on April 21

Another awesome free event brought to you by Albuquerque on the Cheap!
Free Science Cafe for adults at Los Poblanos Inn and Cultural Center about the annular eclipse due in May. Next eclipse like this isn’t till 2023, so best not miss it! Register in advance for the Science Cafe…
New Mexico PBS is hosting a free Science CafĂ©  event and discussion at 10 am on Saturday April 21, 2012, about the annular eclipse due on May 20, 2012.  Info on this free event is so hot-off-the-press they don’t even have the details at the Science Cafe website yet (at time of writing). But we’ve got the scoop from a press release, so here’s what you need to know, as I suspect this one will fill fast!
An annular eclipse is a solar eclipse where the moon doesn’t cover the entire sun, but passes across the center to leave a bright ring around the sun’s circumference, so it looks like a ring of fire. (It burns, burns, burns…) The annular eclipse on May 20 will be the first visible in the mainland U.S. in nearly 18 years, and the next one will be in October 2023.  Hey, I’ll try to remember to remind you of that one nearer the time.
During the New Mexico PBS Science Cafe on April 21, you can find out more about this eclipse, watch a NOVA segment, and discuss it with an expert from The Albuquerque Astronomical Society. Then you’ll know everything there is to know by the time the sun and the moon do their thang over Albuquerque in May.
The Science Cafe often fills quickly in advance, so make your reservation soon. RSVP by contacting Rose Poston, (505) 277-2396 or email for a reservationSeats are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
  • When:  Saturday, April 21, 2012
  • Time:  10 am to noon
  • Where:  Los Poblanos Inn & Cultural Center
  • Cost:  FREE! Reservations required.
Los Poblanos Inn and Cultural Center is located at 4803 Rio Grande Boulevard NW.

Top 100 April Fool's Day Pranks

These are great! What's the best prank you ever pulled?
Need inspiration for a fun April Fool's Day joke this Sunday? Believe it or not, there is an entire website dedicated to you pranksters … The Museum of Hoaxes. And, the San Diego-based website has a list of the Top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes of All Time!

According to a note on the website from the curator, Alex Boese, the list was created in the late 1990s. Since then, it has inspired spinoff lists … even an iPhone app!

Here are a few pranks to get you started:

April Fool's Day Hoax #1: The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

On April Fool's Day, 1957, a BBC news show announced that the weather had eliminated a pest known as the "spaghetti weevil." So, the report said Swiss farmers were enjoying a healthy crop of spaghetti from their spaghetti trees. According to The Museum of Hoaxes, "It is also believed to be the first time the medium of television was used to stage an April Fool's Day hoax."

April Fool's Day Hoax #4: The Taco Liberty Bell

This year it's Doritos Locos Tacos, which are no joke. But back in 1996, the Taco Bell Corporation took out ads in six major news papers on April Fool's Day. The ads announced the company had bought the Liberty Bell and would rename it the "Taco Liberty Bell." The news outraged citizens who called the National Historic Park in Philadelphia, where the bell was located. Hours later, Taco Bell revealed the joke.

April Fool's Day Hoax #7: The Value of Pi Changed by State of Alabama

An article in the April 1998 newsletter of New Mexicans for Science and Reason claimed that the Alabama state legislature had voted to change the value "of the mathematical constant pi from 3.14159 to the 'Biblical value' of 3.0." The article ended up on the Internet and angry people began calling the Alabama legislature.

We only highlighted three hoaxes, which means there are 97 more to browse! Unless, Pali Patch is just pulling your leg!!!
