What To Eat While Watching the New Season of Arrested Development: Skip's Scramble

If you're a fan of the smart and wacky sitcom Arrested Development, you probably couldn't wait to sit down and binge-watch the newest season on Netflix on Sunday. And speaking of bingeing, there is no better meal to accompany your futureAD marathons than this truly impressive recreation of the show's infamous "Skip's Scramble," which includes 12 separate recipes referencing the show, from Cornball Cakes to Hot Ham Water.
Skip's Scramble comes from the brunch menu at Skip Church's Bistro, which makes this offer: Too many choices? Menu too big to swallow? Let Skip serve you up a scram that has something from every dish in the menu. It will knock you into next week!
This rendition, from chef and blogger Brian Staffield, includes recipes like Banana Stand Pancakes ("Promote yourself to Mr. Manager. Then mix all the dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl") and Vodka on the Rocks with a Piece of Toast ("1. Pour some vodka over ice and remember that it's only 8 am. 2. Make a piece toast.")

Where to Squeeze a Home Office into a Full House?

The home office can be an incredibly useful tool, if not sometimes a necessary one. But where can you squeeze one in when it seems that every last square foot in the place is already taken!? If you'd like to set up a home office, but are having these problems, check out "Where to Squeeze a Home Office into a Full House?" below!

Where to Squeeze an Office into a Full House?

It's a perennial small space question that merits revisiting. Under ideal conditions most of us would love to have designated workspace at home, but sometimes square footage and circumstances get in the way. So if your home doesn't have an office where do you put it?
I always had an office. Studios, one bedrooms, shares, it didn't matter, I always had one. It was a priority in every housing search, and when we bought our house we had a plan that made perfect sense. I don't remember the details of that plan, but it was blown out of the water when I got pregnant with twins and we had to rethink how we were using our space.
I was fine being an office-less wonder for a while, or so I thought. I tried going paperless wherever possible and told myself that I could manage my freelance commitments and household management with a laptop. Things change. I attributed my lack of organization to the fabled "mommy brain," but there seems to be another story here. Yes, I had three kids in 23 months and was late paying bills for the first time in my life, but that also correlated with the disappearance of my desk. I'm going back to teaching in a few months and realized that I can't plan a syllabus with a desk. So where do I put one? Ours is not a small space, but like the Yiddish folktale retold in A Big Quiet House, it's full of kids and quiet is in rare supply.
It's a discussion that keeps coming up at Apartment Therapy, but does the solution change when you have young kids in the mix? We have hashed out the feng shui implications of the bedroom office debate, looked for office nooks in the living room, contemplated the pros and cons of the kitchen office, and checked out a few lovely examples of a dining room office. Closets are a good idea when you can martyr one to the cause, but it's definitely not happening here.
So which solution makes the most sense for your family and space?

3 Ways You May Be Ruining Your Knives

After months or years, those old knives just don't keep their edge as well, but there are factors that speed up the dulling process that you may inadvertently be causing. To keep you knives sharper longer, check out these "3 Ways You May Be Ruining Your Knives" below!

3 Ways You May Be Ruining Your Knives

1. You store your knives unsheathed in the utensil drawer.
There are a few reasons this is bad: first of all, it's dangerous to have a knife loose in the drawer. Secondly, an unsheathed knife rubs against other things, which causes it to get dull very quickly. The best way to store your knives is on amagnetic knife strip or in a knife block
If you're really short on space and need to store those knives in a drawer, just slip them into a blade guard first! You can get a set of four on Amazon for about $10.
2. You put your knife in the dishwasher.
Knives should never go in the dishwasher. Dishwasher detergent is very abrasive, and along with the banging around that happens during a wash cycle, will take the sharp edge right off your knife. (Plus, it's not safe for the person unloading the dishwasher!)
Always wash knives by hand in the sink with dish soap and water. Keep the blade facing away from you and the knife low in the sink. Also, don't leave your knife to air dry. Instead, take a tea towel and, holding the knife with the blade facing away from you, dry the knife in short vertical motions perpendicular to the edge. Running a tea towel horizontally along the blade is very dangerous, and a sure-fire way to cut yourself. (Don't worry — I did this for a long time, too!)
3. You slide your knife, blade down, across the cutting board to clear away what you just chopped.
Oh man. I am still trying to break this habit! Do you do this? After you've got a pile of chopped veggies, you scrape your nice, sharp knife — blade down — right across the cutting board to clear some space. Of course when you actually think about it (as I did) that's a terrible way to treat the blade!
An easy solution: just flip the knife over before you slide! That way the flat spine side does the clearing, and you don't ruin your blade.
